Getting a room into Mozaik faster
As of 2026, there are three ways to get a room into Mozaik: type it in yourself in the Room tab (how nearly every job starts today), bring in measurements from a supported laser measuring device with Mozaik's Laser Import, or open a job file that already contains the room. This guide walks the manual workflow honestly (where the minutes actually go) and what shortens each step, including the third route we're building at KitchenCNC.
The manual workflow, step by step
Almost every kitchen starts life as a paper sketch on a clipboard: a rough plan-view outline, wall lengths written along each run, window and door positions, a ceiling height in the corner. Back at the desk, that sketch has to become a Mozaik room before a single cabinet can be placed:
- Create the job and a new room.
- Draw each wall in the Room tab and set its length and height, Mozaik's own training material covers walls, island walls, T-walls and peninsula walls as separate cases, because each one is its own entry step.
- Place every opening: each window and door with its position along the wall, its width, its height, and (for windows) the sill height.
- Check the room against the sketch. Do the walls close? Are the openings on the walls the sketch says they're on?
None of this is hard. It is just long: an ordinary L-shaped kitchen with six wall segments, two windows and a doorway is roughly two dozen individual values, every one of them read off paper and keyed in by hand.
Where the time actually goes
In our 2026 research into cabinet-shop drafting workflows, a $50,000 kitchen carries roughly 50 hours of drafting time end to end. Room entry is a small slice of that, but it is the slice that happens before anything billable can start, and it has an outsized failure mode: every number gets handled twice. Once on site, when the tape measure finds it, and again at the desk, when someone reads handwriting and types it. Each handoff is a chance for a 147 to become a 174.
The expensive part is not the typing. It's that transcription errors surface late. A wall keyed 27 mm short doesn't announce itself in the Room tab; it shows up when a run of cabinets doesn't fit, or worse, after parts are cut. The real cost of slow room entry is measured in the trips back to the tape measure, not the minutes at the keyboard.
What already makes it faster
Before any new tooling, three habits shorten the manual path and cost nothing:
- Fix your sketch conventions. Label walls the same way on every job (A, B, C, D clockwise from the entry door is common), always record the ceiling height, and always record openings with position and size and sill/head heights. - Use Laser Import if you own the hardware. Mozaik supports importing from laser measuring systems, which removes the transcription step entirely. The catch is the up-front cost of the measuring hardware and the discipline of using it on every site, shops that have it tend to swear by it; most small shops still measure with a tape and a pencil.
- Template repeated shapes. If your work is multi-unit (the same galley eight times with mirror flips), a saved job with the room already built beats redrawing it, and Mozaik's job copying handles the rest.
The missing route: sketch straight to room file
The gap in that list is obvious the moment you see the clipboard: the paper sketch already contains the whole room, and today the only bridges from paper into Mozaik are a keyboard or a laser rig. There is no route that starts from what most field measures actually produce: a photo of a hand-drawn sketch.
That is the route we built.
